In the Belly of Jonah is a fast-paced mystery with a likable protagonist and an intricately woven narrative brimming with bizarre yet believable twists. The first in a series, the book expertly lays the groundwork for Liv Bergen, amateur sleuth, and her love interest, FBI Agent Streeter Pierce.
Liv becomes involved in the investigation of the murder of Jill Brannigan, a summer intern at the limestone mine Liv manages near Fort Collins, Colorado (a breathtaking setting that unwittingly becomes an accessory to crime). In doing so, she inadvertently puts her friends, her family, and herself at risk of being swallowed in the belly of a madman bloated with perverse appetites for women, surrealistic art, and renown. This is the second edition of John Zelle’s Python Programming, updated for Python 3. This book is designed to be used as the primary textbook in a college-level first course in computing. It takes a fairly traditional approach, emphasizing problem solving, design, and programming as the core skills of computer science.
However, these ideas are illustrated using a non-traditional language, namely Python. Although Python is used as the language, teaching Python is not the main point of this book. Rather, Python is used to illustrate fundamental principles of design and programming that apply in any language or computing environment. Read the rest of this entry »

Women’s spirituality, suggests educator Harris, is a “dance of the Spirit” consisting of seven steps: “Awakening, Discovering, Creating, Dwelling, Nourishing, Traditioning, and Transforming”.
Each correction: The publisher informs us that the ISBN for Hyam Macco by and Wolf Mankowitz’s The Day God Laughed: Sayings, Fables and Entertainments of the Jewish Sages (LJ 6/1/89) is 0-86051-467-6. We regret the error. Step has its own chapter here, with introductory guidance in “Centering” (being still) and concluding exercises to help readers connect with insights. Very much an interfaith book (Harris draws on Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism), this is also quite feminist in a gentle, nonmilitant way and should appeal to questing women with a slightly New Age bent. Through a bravura tour of American political leaders and their appeals to the electorate, Drew Westen shows that Americans don’t vote with their heads but with their hearts–and that Democratic politicians had better wise up in their approach.
The Political Brain is a serious and groundbreaking investigation into the role of emotion in deciding the outcome of elections. It looks at data across several presidential elections from the 1950s through 2000, examines the evidence for the role of emotion in driving voting behavior, and provides a “clinical” view of a number of campaign ads, debate lines, and personal profiles of the candidates who have sought to win our hearts. This book offers 103 very chunky measures that are each clearly explained and for most marketers quite easily obtainable. You may not want a dashboard of all these measures, but if you scan through the list you’ll see – at least 10 metrics that you’ll wish you had during the last planning round. As such this book offers a powerful diagnostic of the things you need to get your job done. Read the rest of this entry »
