Imagine a world without cars and computers, or toys and televisions, or movies and microwaves. Then imagine a world without engineers. Engineering the ABC’s answers questions about now everyday things work and how engineering relates to so many parts of a child’s daily life. In an entertaining and engaging way, this book shows how engineers shape our world.
This book to be a valuable resource, not only as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Educator interested in simplifying the world of engineering to capture the attention of elementary students, but also as a college professor and a STEM advocate looking for new resources to share with adults whom, fixated on their perception of the complexity of engineering, take for granted that children are surrounded by contextually relevant examples of engineering in their daily lives.
The author and illustrator use familiar and curious technologies and products – such as airplanes, blue jeans, bathtubs, ice-cream and zippers – to draw students in to a new mini-lesson on every page that ties together various subjects from STEM, to History, to careers awareness.
This book really got 1st and 2nd graders thinking about what engineers do. It was a great book for a discussion point, or a starting point to introduce engineering in the curriculum.
