A car accident landed Briana in the hospital, but not as a patient. No, when she finally opened her eyes, it was to find herself in the morgue, lying on the ceiling with a prime view of her covered body. And yet, when an angel appeared to lead her on to her new celestial home, Briana was anything but ready to go. So when another woman burst through the clouds, leaving behind a dying body, Mallory leapt back to Earth, back in time, for a second chance at life.

After seven long years of marriage to Alexandra, Jareth had fill of treacherous women. Although he’d vowed never to love again, when his wife suffered a mishap giving birth to a child that wasn’t even his, suddenly she was not her usual, viscous self. Now she was laughing, calling herself Briana, and turning his life upside-down. He told himself it didn’t matter what she did, he was stubbornly determined not to be drawn in by the same deceptive charms that had fooled him once before.

The characters in Love of a Lifetime are written well and become so real-you actually believe you’ve been transported to 1587 Scotland/England along with Briana. When Kendall addresses her as Lady Briana-you’ll cry-when Jareth calls her Lady Briana you will celebrate…

Out of Time is a great example of the wonderful treasures you can find if you get lucky. Despite the ‘paranormal romance’ subtitle, Out of Time is really more of a time travel romance with a paranormal complication as part of the conflict than an actual paranormal romance, since neither of the leads go bump in the night, but it is a really good time travel romance.

An accidental trip to the past, lands Professor Simon Cross and his graduate Assistant Elizabeth West in New York during the summer of 1929. Being stranded out of time with only each other to rely on, allows the unacknowledged attraction between the pair to come to light. (For those concerned with sensuality level, Simon and Elizabeth’s relationship does become physical and the first love scene is descriptive but not as detailed as most main stream paranormal romance and nowhere near the paint-by-numbers descriptions of the more erotic stuff).

All of the characters in Out of Time are interesting and fully fleshed with interesting back stories – even the supporting characters. The pair couldn’t be more different. From a moneyed background, Simon is a man who has held himself back from life and relationships with all of their messy complications, so the accidental trip to the past pulls him way out of his comfort zone.

Elizabeth’s upbringing was almost on the opposite end of the spectrum, but she genuinely likes people and has a talent for relating to others, so she approaches their `ordeal’ as an adventure and an opportunity to experience first hand all that this era has to offer.

Simon of course wants to be careful not to make ripples in time. But since they have to survive until they hopefully will be returned home, Elizabeth wins and they both find jobs and end up immersed in 1920′s life – the trials and entertainments of the prohibition era itself add an interesting flavor to their story. But survival is going to be more than just making ends meet until it’s time to go home. Simon’s prescient nightmares and a more than human monster who has set his sights on Elizabeth, add an element of peril to the tale and provide the means to bring about an ending that takes the whole time travel part of the story full circle.

This is book about the political and cultural history of western Europe, published in 1902, well before the world wars or any of the other sweeping historical changes to Europe in the 20th century. It’s a book that opines on the nature of political franchise, war, and militarism, written scant years after the American civil war by a professor at Colombia before America had a major military role in the affairs of the world.

A history of Europe written when Germany was still a loose confederation of states guided by Bismarck, Russia was ruled by a Tsar. Words cannot express how fascinating this unique historical perspective on history turned out to be.

This is a very good “introduction” to the history of Europe. It covers most of the important events in the history of Europe, and very masterfully succeeds in keeping a thread among them. It starts from Roman downfall at around 500 AD and finishes with year 1900. It is pretty amazing that the author anticipates further clashes in Europe which happened in few years time (world war I). It not only covers the historical events and wars, but also gives a good insight into the cultural and social aspects of the time. For example, it digs into the reasons of Roman downfall, renaissance, and the feudal system.

Though a highly idiosyncratic writer and thinker, like any author Thucydides betrays the influences of the literature and research of his day. Books have traced his connections to contemporary medicine, sophistic rhetoric and argumentation, philosophy, and drama (Cochrane, Finley, Solmsen, Cornford, Hunter, etc.), as well as to his historical predecessor, Herodotus (484–414).

Thucydides’ polemical historiographical strictures on the methods of historical research and presentation are not necessarily directed against Herodotus, since other authors, in poetry and in prose, treated the same prior events that Herodotus also mentions. For instance, in the case of the comments on the notorious Delian earthquake, the two authors seem to pass each other in the night—oblivious to the specifics that the other has mentioned.

Thucydides’ debt to Herodotus, nevertheless, involves much more than the existence of speeches and battles—for example, inclusions of colonization, myth, and geography. Thucydides never mentions Herodotus by name, although he names the less important fifth-century historian Hellanicus. Is this a slight to Herodotus or a compliment? In the fifth century, no one memorized prose authors or had a wish to look up a reference. Thucydides, unlike Herodotus, does not cite the poets; as with many of his contributions, he excluded materials that others previously included.

Thucydides shares many of Herodotus’ interests. They both focus on military history. They both want to report names of places and people, although the Athenian shows less interest in “coincidences” such as nomen-omen—for example, Hegesistratus, a name that a Spartan king identified as meaningful, when looking for a guide, because it translates as “Leader of the Expedition”. Both also suppress names and make explicit or implicit decisions not to specify individuals—for example, the Spartan commander and the five Spartan judges at Plataea (3.52)—and other officers and speakers are left anonymous.

Thucydides is likely to have known several sophists, and his antithetical writing style shows the influence of the Sicilian Gorgias, whose interests included epistemology and rhetoric. He is also likely to have known Sophocles, a general as well as a tragedian. He mentions neither these two nor Socrates, a notorious Attic gadfly of Pericles and the next generation.

This book provides a reference guide for anyone who wants to get up to speed on computer network concepts and networking technologies. Because each piece of networking hardware and software operates differently, it would require a book the size of the New York City white pages to cover all aspects of the subject. Thus, this book concentrates on fundamental concepts. Emphasis is placed on understanding how the major components of a computer network function and how to use proven practices to deploy, upgrade, and maintain the network.

The book is divided into six parts. Each part provides a body of information that covers a specific area pertaining to computer networks.

Part I, “What Is Networking?”, introduces networking, including an overview of the primary components of computer networks. This part explains the broader issues of how hardware and software function to support the interworking of computers, servers, routers, and other devices.

Part II, “The Basics”, focuses on the concepts underlying data networks. We examine how packet-switching operates and look at the operations of local area networks (LANs) and WANs. This part discusses computer network protocols and explains a widely used conceptual model that depicts how a sending computer transfers data to a receiving computer. Because of the impact and importance of wireless networks, the hour on this topic has been moved from Part VI (of the previous edition) to this part of the book.

Part III, “Building Networks”, walks you through the process of planning and building a network from conception to implementation. Issues related to planning network capacity, creating the network, and then connecting to the Internet are included as part of the discussion. For this latter discussion, the information of TCP/IP and related, supporting protocols has been expanded.

Part IV, “Network Operating Systems”, provides an overview of network operating systems, the major network servers, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008, UNIX, and Linux.

Part V, “Network Administration”, examines the issues related to administering a network. This part includes discussions on both troubleshooting and management.

Part VI, “The Future of Networking”, examines future possible implementations of wireless technology, operating systems, and other aspects of networking. This part discusses the issues related to the future of Linux, the emerging network “cloud,” nationwide wireless hotspots, and the extraordinary field of protein-based computers.

For these 24 hours, you will be the designer of a computer network, as well as its implementer. After you have successfully created a plan for the system, you will undo the shrink-wrap and assemble the components. Next, you will take over the role of the network administrator and make sure the users are happy with your creation.

Bob Moore, Private Eye, dares to investigate those who could incinerate him with a thought. When he is called to help a super from his past, however, he’ll be pushed to his limit. When supers and the police think there is no crime, can he get to the truth? Will he want to for the man that destroyed his marriage?

The Killing Joke, one of favorite Batman stories ever, stirred a bit of controversy because the story involves the Joker brutally, pointlessly shooting Commissioner Gordon’s daughter in the spine. This is a no-holds-barred take on a truly insane criminal mind, masterfully written by British comics writer Alan Moore. The art by Brian Bolland is so appealing that his depiction of the Joker became a standard and was imitated by many artists to follow.

This classic, infamous story in the Batman saga has been recolored with a more effectively cooler palette and set into context with an introduction and an afterword. Escaped from Arkham Asylum, villain deluxe Joker shoots Barbara “Batgirl” Gordon as part of his plan to drive her police commissioner father insane. Intending to prove that anyone can go mad after “one bad day” as he describes in his putative origin story, the Joker also kidnaps and torments Commissioner Gordon.

But Gordon remains sane, and Batman recaptures the Joker—the two actually share a laugh at the ambiguous ending. With Barbara Gordon now a paraplegic, the story stands as a chilling profile of madness. The Killing Joke provoked fury among many readers who lamented the disposal of Barbara Gordon as a mere pawn to testosterone; yet Gordon reinvents herself later as superinfohacker Oracle, poster girl for disability empowerment. A bonus story at the end paints the quieter, equally chilling madness of a Batman fan fantasizing about killing the superhero—a perfect foil for the publicly gaudy Joker.

Gulliver’s Travels describes the four fantastic voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a kindly ship’s surgeon. Swift portrays him as an observer, a reporter, and a victim of circumstance. His travels take him to Lilliput where he is a giant observing tiny people. In Brobdingnag, the tables are reversed and he is the tiny person in a land of giants where he is exhibited as a curiosity at markets and fairs.

The flying island of Laputa is the scene of his next voyage. The people plan and plot as their country lies in ruins. It is a world of illusion and distorted values. The fourth and final voyage takes him to the home of the Houyhnhnms, gentle horses who rule the land. He also encounters Yahoos, filthy bestial creatures who resemble humans. The story is read by British actor Martin Shaw with impeccable diction and clarity and great inflection. If broken into short listening segments, the tapes are an excellent tool for presenting an abridged version of Gulliver’s Travels.

Part One: “A Voyage to Lilliput” is the most famous segment of the novel, and the context of the aforementioned “hostage episode”. After taking leave of his family and country, Gulliver is washed up on the shores of an island inhabited by humanoid beings not more than six inches tall.

In Part Two, Gulliver reaches the polar opposite of Lilliput in “A Voyage to Brobdingnag”, a country of giants where he becomes the helpless victim of a greedy farmer who exploits his diminutive stature to his own advantage. Displayed as a freak of nature, the tiny Gulliver is forced to perform circus tricks till he finally comes into the care of the royal court.

Part Three is the least known of the four parts, and for those who have read the novel, the least popular. Titled “A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Gluggdubdrib and Japan”, it is easy to see that it this episode is filled with Swift’s most creative inventions. It is here that Gulliver discovers a floating island, a race of immortals, a university in which they attempt to discover the answers to all things and an island of spirits who summon historical figures up out of the past. With everything from inward-eyed people to Alexander the Great to exploding dogs, Part Three has it all.

Finally, in Part Four, the novel reaches its most critical and thought-provoking statement on humankind in “A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms”. Gulliver reaches a country inhabited by a remarkable race of horses with the intelligence of humans – perhaps with even *more* intelligence than humans. Also living here is a disgusting race of beings known as “Yahoos” – filthy, greedy, slothful, lecherous creatures who embody every vice known to mankind – and who are suspiciously humanoid in shape and form.
